The month of May is a beautiful time of the year to visit the Emerald Coast. The waters are getting warmer, the beaches start bustling, and locals start preparing for the busiest season of the year. This year, May is packed full of events in Destin that you must check out. From sipping tequila at festival booths to learning more about the unique Lionfish, there is something for everyone! The Destin events in May listed below are some of our favorites to introduce to visitors as they are often hidden gems along the Gulf Coast!
Burning up the Beaches
The Destin Commons is hosting Burning up the Beaches, a three-day event featuring car shows, activities, and parties. Starting on May 5th, the activity of the day is a happy hour on the Buccaneer Pirate Cruise from 6 pm – 8 pm. Friday, May 6th there are activities happening every hour of the day! Choose which activities suit you best and experience some fun along the emerald coast. Saturday, May 7th is the big day where a Cruise Car Show happens from 9 am – 3 pm. A DJ and live music will be played throughout the day.
Live Music at Lulu’s
If you have ever visited the Destin area before, you have probably heard of Lulu’s. This Bay-front restaurant offers delicious food, a beach for the kids, serene views, creative cocktails, and live music every night during the month of May. Local bands and artists take the stage to entertain guests as they enjoy fresh seafood and watch as their kids play in the sand. This is a great way to get out and explore the area without the pressure of being gone for hours at a time.
9th Annual Tacos and Tequila Fest Village of Baytowne Wharf
Head over to the 9th Annual Tacos and Tequila Festival and vote for the Best Taco on the Emerald Coast! Guests will have a voice in the People’s Choice Award and be able to sample many different types of tequilas, margaritas, and cuisine from Mexican restaurants throughout the area. The winner of The Best Taco gets a cash prize of $2,500! It is a three-day event from May 6th – 8th.
Emerald Coast Open Lionfish Tournament and Festival
Ever heard of a Lionfish? They are a beautiful fish that are detrimental to our ecosystems. Not native to the area, they have come in and taken over! Anglers from all over come to the Gulf Coast to assist in controlling the Lionfish issue and throughout the years, decided to create an event celebrating the unique fish. The Emerald Coast Open Lionfish Tournament and Festival is hosted along the Destin harbor and happens from May 9th – 15th. The more Lionfish you catch, the more prizes you win!
